about

Redfin Concerto
composed by LeslieAnn
performed by John and Elizabeth Farr

“I taught myself to write music in 1978 in order to do a classical music score — Redfin Concerto. I wrote out the notes and cross-harmonies, then handed the penciled messy music notation staff sheets over to Nancy Christie, an attorney who was playing concert bassoon with the famous Sacramento Symphony Orchestra.

“Nancy spent weeks copying and correcting my pencil notations and charting it all out for me. Nancy then invited two of her friends, John and Elizabeth Farr, to join us for the recording session in the chapel of St. George’s Church. I recorded on a 850 reel-to-reel tape recorder at 15 ips.

“For the most part Elizabeth was on Viola and John played English horn. They perform my concerto on cold reading of my arrangements. Elizabeth is now world-famous as a concert harpsichordist, and John is equally famous as a leadership-oriented marketing and people skills specialist.

“I could never have done this without Nancy. Sure, I had the tunes in my head, and I knew what harmonies I wanted, but notation was another matter entirely.

“I did my level best to express what I wanted on paper, and Nancy would ask, ‘Do you want it to go like this…la, la, dah, dah, laaaaaaa?’ and I’d say, ‘No, it should go like, “la laaaaa daaaah, daaah dah la,’ and she’d say, ‘Oh, then you want to write it out like this…’” — LeslieAnn, 2014
